Blog for Choice Day - January 22, 2007

It's Blog for Choice day - and the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

The blog Feministing gave me the idea to post about this - and they brought up a good point. It's about trusting women. If the government trusted women to make decisions about their bodies for themselves, abortion might not be such a big issue. If they were really concerned about the welfare of women, or the children that women have the ability to bear - abortion would be legal with no question, and no woman would ever die again from a botched illegal abortion. I hadn't really thought about it this way before - but being anti-choice really doesn't make sense, unless you don't trust women to make these decisions! It is in no way the government's responsibility to be concerned with whether or not women go through their pregnancies.
No woman should be forced to have a baby that they do not want, or can't care for.

Maybe if the world were perfect, abortion wouldn't be necessary. But until rape and incest stop, until women get paid more, until child-care is affordable, until Emergency Contraception is actually available over the counter, until the unbreakable condom is invented, until men start taking responsibility for contraception too, and until women are no longer stigmatized for having an abortion - I will be pro-choice! And even after that, because despite all those reasons, if a woman does not want a baby, she should be allowed this simple procedure that in effect will help the rate of overpopulation in this world!

Why are you pro-choice??
